College Grading Scale: How Letter Grades & GPA Points Work.

Quick answer: Most US colleges grade on a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0.0, with plus and minus grades in between. There is no single national table. Percentage cut-offs, plus/minus values and the lowest passing grade change from one college to the next, so your own registrar’s chart always decides.

A transcript is easier to read once you know what the letters stand for and how they turn into one GPA number. This guide covers the common college grading scale, what each letter means, how GPA is calculated, what counts as a passing grade, and how grading works in India, Pakistan, the UK, Canada and Australia. It also covers the 2026 changes that students from Pakistan should know about.

College Grading Scale Chart

The chart below is a typical US-style scale on 4.0 points. Treat the percentage column as an example, because instructors and departments set their own cut-offs. For a fuller percentage breakdown, see the letter grade scale guide.

Letter gradeExample percentageGPA pointsWhat it signals
A+97–100%4.0Exceptional
A93–96%4.0Excellent
A−90–92%3.7Excellent
B+87–89%3.3Very good
B83–86%3.0Good
B−80–82%2.7Above average
C+77–79%2.3Satisfactory
C73–76%2.0Average
C−70–72%1.7Below average
D+67–69%1.3Low
D63–66%1.0Minimum level
D−60–62%0.7Passing only where accepted
FBelow the college’s cut-off0.0Fail

Real colleges do not all match this chart. The University of Pittsburgh gives an A− 3.75 points and a B+ 3.25, and an A+ is worth 4.00, the same as an A (Pitt grade points). Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada uses a 4.33 scale where an A+ (90–100%) earns 4.33 and an A− earns 3.67 (TMU transcript legend). Both differ from the 3.7 and 3.3 many students expect. Use your college’s table, not a generic one.

What Is a College Grading Scale?

A college grading scale is the system a college uses to measure how well you did in each course and in your degree overall. Depending on the country, results appear as percentages, letter grades, grade points or degree classes.

It does more than label your work. The scale decides whether you earn credit for a course, stay in good academic standing and qualify to graduate. Most systems combine a few parts:

  • Letter grades such as A, B, C, D and F that describe performance.
  • Percentage marks earned on assignments, tests and exams.
  • Grade points that make letters countable for GPA.
  • Credit hours that decide how much each course weighs.
  • Passing rules that set the lowest grade accepted for a course or a major.

Colleges also use symbols such as pass/fail, withdrawal and incomplete, and these are treated differently from ordinary letters.

What Do College Letter Grades Mean?

Letters give a quick read of performance. The meanings below follow common US conventions, and individual colleges can phrase them differently.

A: excellent work. An A shows strong command of the material and consistently high results. On most scales it is worth 4.0 points. Colleges that award A+ and A− usually keep the A+ at 4.0 and drop the A− slightly, to somewhere around 3.67 to 3.75.

B: good work. A B means solid understanding and well-completed coursework, and it carries 3.0 points on a common scale. With plus and minus grades, a B+ and a B− sit on either side of that figure, and over a full transcript those small gaps add up.

C: satisfactory work. A C is average performance and usually worth 2.0 points. It passes the course, but some majors, prerequisites and professional programmes ask for a higher grade, so a C is not always enough.

D: minimum-level work. A D, around 1.0 point, may earn credit at some colleges but is often refused for a major requirement or a prerequisite. You can pass a course and still be asked to retake it.

F: failing work. An F means the course requirements were not met. It usually carries 0.0 points, lowers your GPA and normally means repeating the course.

How Does the College GPA Scale Work?

The GPA scale gives each grade a number so that a whole semester can be summed up in one figure. On the most common 4.0 version:

Letter gradeTypical grade points
A4.0
B3.0
C2.0
D1.0
F0.0

Your GPA is not a simple average of percentages. Courses with more credit hours pull harder on the result, which is why a 4-credit lab matters more than a 1-credit seminar.

How to Calculate College GPA

Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them, and divide by the total credit hours counted in the GPA.

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours

Here is one semester worked through.

CourseCreditsGradePointsQuality points
Statistics3A−3.711.1
Biology4B3.012.0
Academic Writing3B+3.39.9
Economics3C2.06.0
Elective2A4.08.0
Total1547.0
Semester GPA = 47.0 ÷ 15 = 3.13.

Biology and Economics both carry real weight here because of their credits. A B in a 4-credit course lifts your GPA more than the same B in a 2-credit course.

To run your own numbers, use the college GPA calculator for one term or the CGPA calculator for several semesters. The step-by-step method is also covered in how to calculate GPA.

What Is a Passing Grade in College?

A passing grade is the lowest result that still earns credit under your college’s rules. Many US colleges accept a D for some undergraduate courses, while others ask for a C or better. The passing percentage differs too. One college may set 60%, another may use a different cut-off or work only from letters.

Before you decide a grade is safe, check:

  • The minimum grade for that exact course.
  • Whether it is an elective, a major requirement or a prerequisite.
  • The minimum GPA needed to stay in good standing.
  • Whether your programme asks for a higher grade to graduate.
  • Whether you must repeat the course to earn credit.

Passing a course does not mean every degree requirement is met.

Is a D a passing grade in college?

Sometimes, for credit only. A college may give credit for a D in an elective but demand a C in your major subject. A D can also cost you a scholarship or block access to advanced courses, so read the academic catalogue before relying on it.

Is an F always a failing grade?

In an ordinary A-to-F system, yes, and it carries zero points. Colleges also use other marks, and these behave differently.

MarkUsual meaningCounts in GPA?
P or SPass or satisfactoryUsually not
WWithdrew from the courseUsually not, but shows on the transcript
IIncomplete, work still owedNot until it becomes a grade
RepeatCourse retakenDepends on the repeat policy

The transcript legend on your college’s website explains each symbol.

What Is a Good College GPA?

A good GPA depends on your programme and your goals. What clears the bar for one scholarship may be weak for another. On a 4.0 scale, a rough reading looks like this.

GPA rangeGeneral reading
3.70–4.00Very strong
3.30–3.69Strong
3.00–3.29Good
2.50–2.99Moderate
2.00–2.49May meet some minimum requirements
Below 2.00May raise academic-standing concerns

These bands are informal. Honours, probation and graduation thresholds are set by each college. If you need a specific number from your next exam, the final grade calculator and the semester grade calculator show what a remaining assessment needs to deliver.

College Grading Scale vs High School Grading Scale

Both measure performance, but they are built differently.

FeatureHigh schoolCollege
AssessmentTests, homework, projects, examsAssignments, quizzes, labs, projects, exams
Who sets the rulesSchool or education authorityCollege and each course
CreditsOften per subject or completed courseUsed to weight courses in GPA
GPA typeStandard or weightedUsually credit-weighted, unweighted

Some high schools add a point for honours or advanced courses. Colleges more often use a plain 4.0 scale. That is why a high school percentage cannot be converted straight into a college GPA, since the receiving college applies its own rules. For the school side of the maths, see the high school GPA calculator.

College Grading Systems Around the World

There is no single worldwide scale. Countries and colleges use letters, percentages, grade points and degree classes, sometimes together.

United States

A-to-F letters with a 4.0 GPA scale are standard, and plus and minus grades are common. Their values differ, as the Pittsburgh example above shows. Pass/fail, incomplete and withdrawal marks are handled by each college.

India

Most Indian universities report a 10-point CGPA with grades such as O, A+ and A, weighted by credits. Some, like VTU, use their own letters and conversion rule. Pass marks and credit values differ by university, so use your own marksheet. The CGPA vs SGPA guide explains how semester and cumulative results fit together, and CGPA to percentage helps you convert with your university’s rule.

Pakistan

Pakistani universities usually run semester-based GPA and CGPA on a 4.0 scale, but grade-point values, percentage bands and passing grades vary. Follow your university’s regulations rather than assuming one table fits all.

School boards are a separate story, and this is where 2026 matters. In October 2025 the Federal Board (FBISE) notified a revised grading formula, with A++ at 96–100% and D at 40–50%, and a pass mark of 40% (APP, 7 October 2025). It applies from the first annual exams of 2026 for SSC-I and HSSC-I, and from 2027 for the second-year classes. In September 2026 the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) set 40% as the minimum passing marks, and The Express Tribune reported that implementation had already begun in the Sindh, Federal, AJK, Karakoram, AKU-EB and ZUEB boards (Express Tribune, 6 September 2026). These are school and intermediate rules, not university ones, so do not mix them up with your degree’s grading table.

United Kingdom

UK universities classify degrees as First, Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2) and Third. Modules are marked in percentages, which do not map neatly onto US letter grades, and each university has its own rules for the final class.

Canada

Canadian universities use 4.0, 4.3, 9-point, 12-point or percentage systems depending on the institution. Toronto Metropolitan University, for example, grades on a 4.33 scale where an A+ is 4.33. A GPA number is only meaningful with the issuing university’s scale beside it.

Australia

Australian universities commonly use marks and bands such as High Distinction, Distinction, Credit and Pass, or a 7-point GPA. Percentage boundaries for each band depend on the university.

How College Grades Affect Your Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA covers every graded course across all semesters, built from total quality points and total credit hours. It is not an average of your term GPAs.

Say you already have 30 credits at a 3.40 GPA, which is 102 quality points. Add the 47.0 points from the 15-credit semester above:

Cumulative GPA = (102 + 47) ÷ (30 + 15) = 149 ÷ 45 = 3.31

Averaging 3.40 and 3.13 would give 3.27, which is too low because the earlier term carries twice the credits. Repeating a course can lift the result, but it depends on the college. Some replace the old grade, some average both. At Pittsburgh, for instance, the repeat grade replaces the earlier one in the GPA even if it is lower, while the transcript still shows both attempts (Pitt course repeat policy).

The cumulative GPA calculator handles the weighting for you.

How to Improve Your College Grades

The fastest gains come from reading the grading policy in your syllabus, tracking each mark as it arrives, and putting effort where the weight is: a 40% exam deserves more preparation than a 5% quiz. Ask for feedback early, and check whether a retake replaces or averages with the old grade before you re-enrol. The how to raise your GPA guide shows which courses give the biggest lift.

Mistakes to Avoid When Reading a Grading Scale

  • Using a generic chart instead of the registrar’s table.
  • Assuming an A+ is always worth the same as an A, or always worth more. Pitt gives both 4.00, Toronto Metropolitan gives A+ 4.33 against 4.00 for an A.
  • Averaging semester GPAs instead of using total quality points and credits.
  • Treating pass/fail as risk-free.
  • Plugging a 10-point CGPA into a form that expects a 4.0 GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions About the College Grading Scale

What is the standard college grading scale?

Many US colleges use A-to-F letters with a 4.0 GPA scale. There is no universal version, because percentage ranges, grade points and passing rules vary by institution.

What GPA is an A in college?

On most US scales an A is 4.0. Some colleges also give A+ the same 4.0, while others, like Toronto Metropolitan University, give an A+ more (4.33). Check your own chart.

What percentage is an A in college?

It often starts at 90% or 93%, but there is no universal cut-off. Use the grading policy in your syllabus or catalogue.

What percentage is a C in college?

A C commonly falls somewhere between 70% and 79%, depending on the college’s boundaries.

Is a 3.0 GPA good in college?

It is generally solid on a 4.0 scale. Whether it is enough for a scholarship or graduate programme depends on that programme’s requirements.

What is the lowest passing grade in college?

It varies. Some colleges accept a D for certain undergraduate courses, others require a C, and many majors set a stricter minimum.

Does an F affect college GPA?

Yes. An F usually adds zero points while its credits still count, which pulls the GPA down. Whether a retake replaces it depends on the college.

Are college GPA and CGPA the same?

GPA often refers to a term or a set of courses and CGPA to the cumulative figure across semesters, but the terms vary by country. Check how your university defines each.

Can I convert a percentage into a college GPA?

Only roughly. Different institutions use different bands and points, so an accurate conversion needs the receiving college’s own policy.

Has the college grading scale changed in 2026?

There is no worldwide change to college grading scales in 2026, and each institution updates its own rules. In Pakistan, the revised school and intermediate grading policy began phasing in with the 2026 annual exams, with a 40% pass mark. University grading must be checked separately.

Bottom Line: Read Your Own Table First

The 4.0 chart is a useful starting point, but the details decide your result. Look up your college’s plus/minus values, passing grades and repeat rules, then use them to plan your GPA. When you are ready, run your marks through the college GPA calculator, and the SGPA calculator if your university grades on a 10-point scale.
