VIT GPA Calculator
VIT grades on S, A, B, C, D, E and F, not the O/A+/A scale most other Indian universities use. This calculator uses VIT's own grade points and gives you your SGPA, CGPA and percentage equivalent.
Quick answer: VIT SGPA = Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits, with S = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C = 7, D = 6, E = 5 and F = 0. For a percentage, the conversion widely published for VIT is CGPA × 10, so an 8.5 CGPA is about 85%.

How GPA and CGPA are calculated at VIT
The arithmetic is the same as any credit-weighted system. What is different is the grade letters and the points behind them. Multiply each course's grade point by its credits, add them up, and divide by the credits you took. Do it for one semester and you have your GPA (SGPA). Do it across every semester and you have your CGPA.
One semester. B (4 credits), S (1 credit) and C (3 credits): 8×4 + 10×1 + 7×3 = 32 + 10 + 21 = 63 over 8 credits. SGPA = 7.88.
Two semesters. Semester 1 is 8.5 over 26 credits and Semester 2 is 7.9 over 24 credits. CGPA = (8.5×26 + 7.9×24) ÷ 50 = (221 + 189.6) ÷ 50 = 8.21. A plain average of the two SGPAs would give 8.20, close here only because the credits are nearly equal.
VIT's grading scale, and the relative grading catch
VIT does not use the generic Indian scale. Here is the scale the calculator uses, with the mark ranges that go with each grade under absolute grading.
| Grade | Marks | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| S | 90 – 100 | 10 |
| A | 80 – 89 | 9 |
| B | 70 – 79 | 8 |
| C | 60 – 69 | 7 |
| D | 55 – 59 | 6 |
| E | 50 – 54 | 5 |
| F | Below 50 | 0 |
There is a catch that many calculators skip. VIT is described as using both absolute and relative grading, and for larger theory classes the grade cut-offs are set relative to how the class performs. In practice that means the same marks can land on different letters in different terms. So do not guess your grade from your marks. Enter the grade that is printed on your grade sheet, and the calculator will do the rest.
VIT CGPA to percentage
The conversion most widely published for VIT is simple: percentage = CGPA × 10. That is why the tool shows a percentage next to your CGPA.
| CGPA | Percentage (× 10) |
|---|---|
| 10 | 100% |
| 9.0 | 90% |
| 8.5 | 85% |
| 8.0 | 80% |
| 7.5 | 75% |
| 7.0 | 70% |
| 6.0 | 60% |
For anything official, such as a visa, a credential evaluation or a recruiter who wants it in writing, check VIT's current conversion document for your batch or ask the academic office for a certificate. Treat any calculator, including this one, as a convenient estimate.
Why a generic CGPA calculator gets VIT wrong
Pick any course graded B. On VIT's scale that is 8 points. On the common O/A+/A/B+/B scale, a B is worth 6. Two points off on a single course, multiplied by its credits, is enough to move a whole semester's SGPA. The same goes for grades like D and E, which do not even exist on the generic scale. If you are a VIT student, use a VIT scale.
F grades and arrears
An F is worth zero points and counts as a fail. If you tick the checkbox in the calculator, F-graded courses are left out of the total credits, which shows you what your CGPA would look like without them. When you clear an arrear, enter the improved grade for that course instead of adding a second row for the same course. Whether the new grade replaces the old one or is treated differently is set by the academic regulations of your programme, so confirm there.
Frequently asked questions
Does VIT use the same scale as other Indian universities?
No. The maximum is 10, but VIT uses S, A, B, C, D, E and F rather than O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P and F, with different mark boundaries. Using a generic calculator will give you the wrong CGPA.
Is the grading scale the same across VIT campuses?
Reports from VIT Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal and VIT-AP describe the same S to F scale and grade points, so the calculator applies to all of them.
How do I convert my VIT CGPA to percentage?
The widely used conversion is CGPA × 10, so 8.5 CGPA is 85%. For official purposes, rely on VIT's own conversion document or a certificate from the academic office.
What is relative grading at VIT?
In larger theory classes, grade boundaries depend on how the class performed, rather than fixed marks. That is why you should enter the grade on your grade sheet instead of estimating it from marks.
How do I convert a VIT CGPA to a 4.0 GPA for an MS application?
Convert to a percentage first, then use the destination country's banding, or let the evaluator the university names (such as WES) do it. Our study abroad GPA converter gives a planning estimate.
Can I use this calculator for VIT-AP, Chennai and Bhopal?
Yes. They follow the same scale, so the same calculator works.
