SGPA to Percentage

The same formula as CGPA to percentage, applied to one semester. Pick your university to convert this term's SGPA, or work backwards from a percentage you already have.

Quick answer: Multiply your SGPA by 9.5 on the standard Indian 10-point scale, so an 8.6 SGPA is 81.7%. VTU is different: (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, so the same 8.6 is 78.5%. Always use the formula your own university publishes.

The SGPA to percentage formulas

SGPA and CGPA sit on the same grading scale, so the conversion does not change between them. Only the number you feed in does. If your university uses × 9.5 for CGPA, it uses × 9.5 for a single semester's SGPA too.

ScaleFormula
Standard Indian 10-pointPercentage = SGPA × 9.5
VTUPercentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10
US 4.0 (indicative)Percentage ≈ GPA × 25
Singapore 5.0 CAPPercentage ≈ CAP × 20
Australia 7-pointPercentage ≈ GPA ÷ 7 × 100

You may also see other rules quoted online, such as (SGPA × 10) − 7.5. Some universities do publish their own formula, so check your university's circular before choosing.

Same SGPA, different result. Sana's third semester SGPA is 8.6. On the standard scale that is 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. Her friend Hina at VTU, with the same 8.6, gets (8.6 − 0.75) × 10 = 78.5%. The scale, not the effort, explains the 3.2-point gap.

The tool's own table regenerates for whichever scale you pick, so a Toronto, NUS or UNSW student sees the bands that apply to them.

Why convert a single semester at all

  • Internship and placement forms that ask for "last semester percentage" when you have no final CGPA yet.
  • Tracking a trend. 76%, 79%, 74% is easier to read at a glance than 8.0, 8.3, 7.8.
  • Scholarship renewals that depend on this semester's percentage rather than your CGPA.

For anything official, your university's own conversion on the marksheet or certificate is the figure that counts. This is an estimate for planning.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

On the standard Indian 10-point scale, multiply by 9.5. For VTU, subtract 0.75 and multiply by 10. Other universities may publish their own formula, so select your scale in the tool.

Is the SGPA to percentage formula different from CGPA?

No. Both use the same formula because they sit on the same scale. The only difference is whether you convert one semester or the cumulative figure.

What percentage is a good SGPA?

On the × 9.5 scale, 8.0 or above (76%+) is generally strong, 7.0 to 7.9 (66.5% to 75%) is solid, and below 6.0 (under 57%) is worth addressing. The bands shift on other scales.

What percentage is an SGPA of 8.0?

76% on the standard × 9.5 formula and 72.5% on VTU's formula.

Can I convert percentage back to SGPA?

Yes, use the direction toggle. For 10-point scales it divides by 9.5, so 76% returns 8.0. Treat it as an estimate because of rounding.

Why do two students with the same SGPA get different percentages?

They are likely on different scales. An 8.6 converts differently at a standard university than at VTU, so always check which formula yours uses.
