CGPA Calculator

Add your subjects, pick your grades, and get your exact credit-weighted CGPA across every semester, using your own university's grading scale.

Quick answer: To calculate CGPA, multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, add all the results, and divide by your total credits. Example: grades of 8, 7 and 10 with 4, 3 and 2 credits give 73 ÷ 9 = 8.11 CGPA.

How CGPA is calculated, step by step

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in every subject across all semesters. "Credit-weighted" simply means a 4-credit subject counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.

  1. Note each subject's grade point. On the common 10-point scale, O = 10, A+ = 9 and A = 8.
  2. Multiply by credits. A grade point of 8 in a 4-credit subject gives 32.
  3. Add all the products from every subject and every semester.
  4. Divide by total credits taken across the same subjects.
CGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

CGPA = 73 ÷ 9 = 8.11. Enter the same three subjects in the calculator above to check it.

Why you can't simply average your SGPAs

This is the most common CGPA mistake. SGPA is the weighted average of one semester. If you average two SGPAs directly, you treat both semesters as equally important, even when one has far more credits.

Example. Semester 1: SGPA 8.0 over 20 credits. Semester 2: SGPA 9.0 over 30 credits. Simple average = 8.5. Correct weighted CGPA = (8.0 × 20 + 9.0 × 30) ÷ 50 = 8.6.

The two methods only match when every semester carries the same number of credits. This calculator always weights by credits, so you get the figure your university would compute. If you only want one semester, use the SGPA calculator.

How to use this CGPA calculator

  • Choose your university or scale. Selecting it loads the right grade letters and points, so what you see matches your marksheet.
  • Add a semester and enter each subject with its grade and credit hours. Use "+ Add semester" for as many semesters as you have completed.
  • Press Calculate. You get your CGPA, a per-semester SGPA, an approximate percentage and the class or division.
  • Copy or download the result as text or CSV for applications.

It supports the Indian 10-point scale, VTU's S/A/B grading, US 4.0, 4.3 and 5.0 GPA, UK percentage honours, Pakistan HEC, Canada, Australia, Singapore and UAE systems.

Typical 10-point grade table

GradeGrade pointMeaning
O10Outstanding
A+9Excellent
A8Very good
B+7Good
B6Above average
C5Average
P4Pass
F0Fail

Letters and points vary by university. VTU, for example, uses S, A, B and so on, and autonomous colleges may add an A++ grade. Always follow the table printed on your own marksheet. For the full list, see the CGPA grading system guide.

CGPA on different scales

CGPA does not mean the same thing everywhere. The maximum depends on the scale your institution uses.

ScaleMaximumCommon in
10-point10India (CBSE, most universities)
4.0 GPA4.0USA, Pakistan (HEC), UAE, many in Canada
5.0 CAP5.0Singapore (NUS, NTU)
7-point7Australia

A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and an 8.7 on a 10-point scale describe similar standing, but they are not interchangeable numbers. Learn more in CGPA vs SGPA.

Failed subjects and backlogs

Universities treat failed subjects differently. Some count the failed subject with 0 grade points until you clear it, so it pulls your CGPA down. Others exclude failed subjects from the total credits until they are cleared. The checkbox above lets you see both results. Follow the rule written in your university's examination regulations for any official figure.

If you are planning to clear a backlog, re-enter that subject with its new grade and watch how the CGPA changes. It is a quick way to see whether a re-attempt is worth the effort.

What is a good CGPA?

It depends on what you want to do with it. On a 10-point scale, 7.5 or above is generally considered good, and 8.5 or above is strong. Many campus recruiters set a minimum cut-off, often somewhere between 6.0 and 7.5, and some programmes or companies ask for more. For masters abroad, check the specific university's admission page, because requirements vary widely by course. To raise your score, read our guide on how to raise your GPA.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Averaging SGPAs instead of weighting by credits.
  • Entering 0 credits for lab or project subjects that your university actually credits.
  • Using the wrong grade scale. A VTU student should not use the generic 10-point table.
  • Mixing up grade points and marks. Use the Marks to CGPA tool if you only have raw marks.
  • Treating the converted percentage as official. It is an equivalent for guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is CGPA?

CGPA is the Cumulative Grade Point Average, the credit-weighted average of grade points across all your semesters. It summarises overall academic performance in a single number.

What is the formula for CGPA?

CGPA = Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits.

Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?

Only when every semester has the same total credits. Otherwise a plain average is slightly off, and you should use the credit-weighted formula.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester, while CGPA combines every semester completed so far. See CGPA vs SGPA for a full comparison.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

CBSE's published rule is CGPA × 9.5, and VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Other universities may publish their own formula. Use our CGPA to Percentage tool and check your university's rule.

Should failed subjects be counted in CGPA?

It depends on your university's rules. Tick the option above to exclude them from total credits, or leave it unticked to include them with zero grade points.

Can I calculate CGPA for the US 4.0 scale?

Yes. Select a US 4.0 scale and the tool applies the same credit-weighted formula with 4.0-scale grade points.

Is this CGPA calculator free and accurate?

Yes, it is free and uses the standard credit-weighted formula. Results are for guidance, so confirm your official CGPA with your university.
