CGPA Meaning & Definition
The full form of CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average. is the average of the grade points you earn across all your subjects and semesters. Schools and universities use it to judge how well a student has performed over a full academic year or an entire degree program.
A percentage depends on raw marks from each exam. CGPA works differently: every subject is converted into a grade point on a fixed scale, most commonly out of 10 in India and out of 4.0 in the US. This gives a fairer, more balanced picture of your performance and reduces the pressure of chasing exact marks in every paper.
In India, CGPA is followed by boards like CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and by universities such as VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and SPPU. It plays a big role in merit ranking, campus placements, government job eligibility, and applications for a master's degree abroad.
