SGPA Calculator

Work out one semester's grade point average on your own university's scale, and see what it does to your running CGPA before results day.

Quick answer: SGPA = Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits for one semester. Five courses worth 4, 1, 3, 2 and 2 credits with grades A, O, B+, B and A+ give 93 points over 12 credits, so SGPA = 7.75.

How SGPA is calculated

SGPA, short for Semester Grade Point Average, is the credit-weighted average of every subject you took in one semester. Nothing from earlier terms goes into it. Each subject's grade point is multiplied by its credits, the results are added, and the total is divided by the semester's credits.

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours (this semester only)

SGPA = 93 ÷ 12 = 7.75. His two best grades (O and A+) sit on only 3 credits between them, which is why the result lands below the 8 he expected.

Why your SGPA can look lower than your grades

Because credits, not subjects, carry the weight. A semester with one weak grade in a 4-credit core subject and two top grades in 1-credit labs will always feel disappointing, since the labs barely move the average while the core subject pulls hard. Before worrying about the number, look at where your credits are concentrated.

Many websites also tell students to add up SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters. That only works when every term has the same credits. This calculator always weights by credits, which is what your university does.

How one semester moves your CGPA

Fill in the two optional boxes (your CGPA before this semester and the credits behind it) and the tool does the second calculation for you.

New CGPA = (Old CGPA × Old Credits + SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ (Old Credits + Semester Credits)

The lesson hides in the denominator. Here is what a 9.00 SGPA does to a 7.00 CGPA when the semester carries 20 credits.

Second semester7.00209.008.00
Fourth semester7.00609.007.50
Seventh semester7.001409.007.25

Same effort, three very different payoffs. Early semesters are cheap to fix and expensive to waste. If you are chasing a specific final number, run it through the Target CGPA Planner instead of guessing.

Predicting your SGPA before results

Enter the grade you expect in every paper, then run it again with one grade lower on the two subjects you feel least sure about. The gap between those two numbers is your realistic range, and it is usually narrower than anxiety suggests. If you already know your CGPA before and after a semester, you can also work backwards:

SGPA = (New CGPA × Total Credits − Old CGPA × Old Credits) ÷ Semester Credits

Getting an accurate result

  • Use credits from the scheme of study. Contact hours and credit hours differ. A lab that meets three hours a week is often only one credit.
  • Treat audit and non-credit subjects as zero credits. They appear on the transcript but carry no weight.
  • Repeating a subject? Enter the new grade in place of the old one if your university replaces the attempt, and keep both only if it averages them.
  • Pick the right scale. An A− is worth 3.7 in the US but 7 out of 9 at some Canadian universities, so the scale you choose matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good SGPA?

On a 10-point scale, 8.0 and above is generally strong, 7.0 to 7.9 is solid, and below 6.0 is a signal to change something. On a 4.0 scale that is roughly 3.3 and above, 2.8 to 3.2 and below 2.5. Placement cells usually read your CGPA, so one weak semester is rarely fatal.

Is SGPA the same as GPA?

Effectively yes. SGPA is the South Asian term for what US and Canadian universities call term GPA or sessional GPA. Both are the credit-weighted average of one semester.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

It depends on your scale. Most Indian 10-point universities use SGPA × 9.5, VTU uses (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, and some publish their own rule, so check yours. The SGPA to percentage converter covers each one.

Can I calculate CGPA from a single SGPA?

Only in your first semester, when SGPA and CGPA are the same number. After that you need every earlier semester, or your existing CGPA plus the credits behind it, which is what the optional boxes are for.

Does a failed subject count in SGPA?

In most systems yes. An F carries zero points while its credits stay in the denominator. Some universities remove failed credits until the paper is cleared, and the checkbox next to the buttons lets you see both results.

Why is my SGPA lower than my average grade?

Because credits carry the weight. Top grades in small-credit labs move a semester very little, while one weak grade in a 4-credit core subject pulls it down sharply.
