CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Most Indian boards multiply CGPA by 9.5, VTU subtracts 0.75 first, and a 4.0 GPA needs a completely different approach. Pick your university and get the conversion it actually uses.
Quick answer: To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply your CGPA by 9.5 (the CBSE method). For example, 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. VTU is different: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so 8.5 CGPA equals 77.5%. Other universities publish their own formula.

CGPA to percentage formulas
There is no single worldwide formula. Each board or university publishes its own conversion, so the right multiplier depends on where you studied.
| Board / university | Formula |
|---|---|
| CBSE | Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 |
| VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) | Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 |
| US 4.0 scale (indicative only) | Percentage ≈ GPA × 25 |
| Singapore 5.0 CAP (indicative only) | Percentage ≈ CAP × 20 |
| Any other university | Use the formula in its latest official circular |
Some universities, including several large state and technical universities, publish their own tables or formulas instead of ×9.5. If yours does, select it in the tool or follow the circular on its website.
Worked example: same CGPA, different percentage
Take an 8.2 CGPA. CBSE method: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. VTU method: (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%. That is a 3.4-point gap from the same CGPA, which is why choosing the right formula matters.
If a form or employer names the formula, use it. If they do not, state which one you used, for example "CGPA 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%".

How CBSE arrives at a CGPA
In CBSE Class 10, each subject gets a grade, and each grade has a grade point. The CGPA is the average of those grade points, and the board's rule for the percentage equivalent is CGPA × 9.5.
| Marks range | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 91–100 | A1 | 10 |
| 81–90 | A2 | 9 |
| 71–80 | B1 | 8 |
| 61–70 | B2 | 7 |
| 51–60 | C1 | 6 |
| 41–50 | C2 | 5 |
| 33–40 | D | 4 |
Because each grade covers a range of marks, ×9.5 is an approximation. It is a reasonable equivalent but not an exact record of your marks.
How to convert CGPA to percentage, step by step
- Find your exact CGPA on the marksheet or portal.
- Identify the formula for your board or university, or the one named by the form.
- Apply it: multiply by 9.5 for CBSE, or subtract 0.75 then multiply by 10 for VTU.

Converting a 4.0 GPA to percentage
There is no official universal conversion from a US-style 4.0 GPA to percentage. The tool uses an indicative multiplier (GPA × 25) to give a rough idea, but US grades are not linear marks, so a 3.0 does not mean exactly 75% everywhere. For study abroad or visa applications, credential evaluators such as WES or ECE apply their own methods, so rely on their evaluation. Our study abroad GPA converter explains this in more detail.
Is the converted percentage official?
No. A conversion is an equivalent for guidance. The marksheet or certificate issued by your university is the official record. Many universities issue a CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate on request, which is useful when an employer or application portal insists on a percentage.
Common mistakes
- Using ×9.5 for a university that publishes a different rule.
- Forgetting VTU's subtraction step, which can overstate the percentage by several points.
- Using the percentage you calculated when the form asks for the official one printed on your marksheet.
- Treating the 4.0 GPA conversion as exact.
