SGPA to GPA Calculator

Convert one semester's SGPA into a 4.0-scale GPA. If the semester came from an exchange or transfer, blend it into your existing GPA to see the combined result.

Quick answer: Convert SGPA to a percentage (SGPA × 9.5 on the standard scale), then map that percentage to the 4.0 scale. A 7.6 SGPA is 72.2%, which maps to about a 3.0 GPA. Blended with a 3.40 GPA over 60 credits, an 18-credit semester at 3.0 gives 3.31.

Converting one semester, then folding it into the rest

An SGPA is one term's performance on an Indian-style scale. A 4.0 equivalent takes two steps, SGPA to percentage and percentage to a 4.0 band. A third step blends the result with credits you already hold at a GPA-based institution.

This semester's GPA = 4.0 band of (SGPA × 9.5) Combined GPA = (Existing GPA × Existing Credits + This GPA × This Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Worked example. An exchange semester SGPA of 7.6 gives 72.2%, about a 3.0 GPA. The home record stands at 3.40 over 60 credits and this semester carried 18 credits, so combined GPA = (3.40 × 60 + 3.0 × 18) ÷ 78 = 258 ÷ 78 = 3.31.

Who actually needs this

  • Exchange and study-abroad students whose host semester was graded on an Indian-style scale.
  • Transfer students moving credits from an Indian institution into a GPA-based programme.
  • Dual-degree and twinning students tracking one combined GPA across two institutions.
  • Scholarship or visa forms that want one cumulative GPA across more than one institution.

Getting an accurate result

Check your institution's transfer policy first

Universities that regularly accept Indian credit often publish their own conversion table, which may differ from a percentage-based mapping. Ask the registrar or international office before assuming this is what will appear on your transcript.

Credits do not always carry grades

Some institutions accept the credit hours but record the semester as pass or fail, so it never touches the GPA, however well it converts.

Reverse conversion

GPA → SGPA uses the middle of each GPA band, so treat the reverse result as a rough guide.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA does a 7.6 SGPA convert to?

On the standard 10-point scale, 7.6 is about 72.2%, which maps to roughly a 3.0 GPA using common bands. Your institution's own table can differ.

Will my exchange semester's SGPA appear on my home GPA?

It depends on your home institution's transfer policy. Some fold the converted grade into the cumulative GPA, others record the credits as pass or fail with no GPA impact.

Can I convert a GPA back into an SGPA?

Yes, use the direction toggle. It applies the inverse of your scale's formula to estimate the SGPA, so treat the result as approximate.

Does this work for scales other than the standard 10-point one?

Yes. Select your university or scale, including VTU or Pakistan's HEC scale, and the conversion uses that scale's own percentage formula.

Should I report the converted GPA on an application?

No. Report your SGPA and percentage exactly as your transcript shows them. The institution will calculate any equivalent itself.

Is this the same as GPA to CGPA?

It is the opposite direction on a smaller scale. For converting a GPA into an Indian CGPA, use the GPA to CGPA calculator.
