GPA to CGPA Calculator
India calls it CGPA, the US and Canada call it GPA. Same idea, different scale. This converts your GPA into an Indian CGPA on two common formulas at once, so you can see the spread before you decide which one applies.
Quick answer: The quick method is CGPA = GPA ÷ 4 × 10, so a 3.5 GPA is about 8.75 CGPA. This calculator uses a slower, percentage-based route (GPA to percentage, then percentage ÷ 9.5), which gives about 9.21 for the same 3.5. The two methods differ, so check which one your university or form expects.

Three ways to convert, and why they disagree
You will see three approaches online, and they do not give the same answer. That is not a bug. Each one makes a different assumption about what a GPA is worth.
- Direct ratio: CGPA = GPA ÷ 4 × 10. Simple, and fine for a rough idea.
- Percentage route, standard: GPA to percentage, then percentage ÷ 9.5. This follows the CBSE-style relationship between CGPA and percentage.
- Percentage route, VTU: GPA to percentage, then (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75.
3.5 GPA on the US 4.0 scale. Direct ratio: 8.75. Percentage route: 3.5 × 25 = 87.5%, then 87.5 ÷ 9.5 = 9.21 on the standard formula, or (87.5 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 9.50 on VTU's.
GPA to CGPA chart (US 4.0 scale)
| US GPA | Direct ratio (÷ 4 × 10) | Standard (% ÷ 9.5) |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | 10.00 | 10.00 |
| 3.7 | 9.25 | 9.74 |
| 3.5 | 8.75 | 9.21 |
| 3.3 | 8.25 | 8.68 |
| 3.0 | 7.50 | 7.89 |
| 2.7 | 6.75 | 7.11 |
| 2.5 | 6.25 | 6.58 |
| 2.0 | 5.00 | 5.26 |
The percentage route runs higher because it treats a 3.0 as 75%, while the direct ratio treats it as 7.5 out of 10. Neither is official. The GPA × 25 step is an approximation, since US grades are not linear marks.
When this conversion actually gets used
- Students moving from a GPA-based university into an Indian institution that reports CGPA.
- Indian universities reviewing international applicants whose transcripts show a 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 or 7-point GPA.
- Returnees applying to Indian postgraduate programmes that state a minimum CGPA.
- Merit lists and scholarships that need every applicant on one scale.
The calculator also checks your result against typical Indian cut-offs, roughly 5.0 for undergraduate, 6.0 for master's and 6.5 for research programmes. Treat those as common ranges, not rules. Each institute sets its own, and reserved categories often differ.
Choosing between the standard and VTU result
The standard formula is the one most Indian universities follow. VTU is the best-known exception, with its own rule. If you are converting for a specific Indian university, look up which formula it publishes. If it publishes none, the standard one is the safer default, and it is worth writing which method you used.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing a self-converted CGPA on an application. Report your GPA as your transcript states it. Admissions offices do their own conversion from official documents.
- Multiplying by 2.5 and stopping there. It is a rough shortcut, not a method any institution endorses.
- Using a US formula for a Canadian 9- or 12-point GPA. Select the right scale first, so the percentage step is correct.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert GPA to CGPA?
The quickest way is GPA ÷ 4 × 10, so a 3.5 GPA is about 8.75. A more careful route converts GPA to percentage first, then divides by 9.5, which gives about 9.21 for the same 3.5.
Why do I get two different CGPA numbers?
India has no single formula. The standard ÷ 9.5 rule and VTU's (% ÷ 10) + 0.75 rule give different results from the same percentage, so the tool shows both.
What GPA is equal to a 9.0 CGPA?
On the standard formula, 9.0 CGPA is 85.5%, which is roughly 3.42 on the US 4.0 scale using the common × 25 approximation. The exact figure depends on the method the receiving institution uses.
Is a 3.0 GPA good enough for an Indian master's programme?
A 3.0 comes out near 75% and about 7.9 CGPA on the standard route, which clears the 6.0 many programmes ask for. Check each programme's own requirement.
Does this work for Pakistani, Canadian or Australian GPA?
Yes. Choose the matching scale and the tool applies that scale's percentage rule before converting to CGPA.
Should I put the converted CGPA on my application?
No. Use the GPA exactly as your transcript shows it and let the institution convert it.
