Marks to CGPA Calculator
Don't know your letter grades? Type the raw marks you scored in each subject. This tool works out the grade for you, then computes your CGPA.
Quick answer: To convert marks to CGPA, turn each subject's marks into a percentage, look up the grade and grade point from your university's grade bands, then take the credit-weighted average. For example, 78% is typically an A (8 points) on the common Indian 10-point scale.

How to convert marks to CGPA
Most CGPA calculators assume you already know your letter grades. In practice, many students only get raw marks back, such as 78, 63 or 91, and have to work out the grade themselves. This tool does that lookup automatically, subject by subject.
- Marks to percentage: marks ÷ total marks × 100.
- Percentage to grade and grade point: use your grade bands.
- Grade points to CGPA: Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
Common 10-point mark bands
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | O | 10 |
| 80–89 | A+ | 9 |
| 70–79 | A | 8 |
| 60–69 | B+ | 7 |
| 50–59 | B | 6 |
| 45–49 | C | 5 |
| 40–44 | P | 4 |
| Below 40 | F | 0 |
These bands are a common pattern, not a universal rule. Some departments set their own boundaries, especially near the edges, so a 79 and an 80 can matter. If your marksheet already shows the letter grade, trust it.
Worked example
Imran scores 78/100 in Thermodynamics (4 credits), 91/100 in Workshop (1 credit) and 65/100 in Maths-II (3 credits).
| Subject | Marks | Grade | Points | Credits | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thermodynamics | 78 | A | 8 | 4 | 32 |
| Workshop | 91 | O | 10 | 1 | 10 |
| Maths-II | 65 | B+ | 7 | 3 | 21 |
| Total | 8 | 63 |
CGPA = 63 ÷ 8 = 7.88, without having to look up a single grade boundary by hand.
The same 78% in different grading systems
A mark of 78% is a solid A on a standard 10-point Indian scale, a C+ on the US 4.0 scale and comfortably inside First Class Honours in the UK. The number on your answer sheet does not change, but what it is worth does, because every system draws its boundaries in a different place.
| 78% converts to | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| India, 10-point (common) | A | 8 / 10 |
| USA, 4.0 with +/− | C+ | 2.3 / 4.0 |
| Pakistan, HEC 4.0 | B+ | 3.3 / 4.0 |
| Australia, 7-point | Distinction | 6 / 7 |
| Singapore, 5.0 CAP | B+ | 4.0 / 5.0 |
That is why you should convert with your own scale's cut-offs, not a generic one. Pick your university in the tool and the correct bands load automatically.
Using this calculator well
Set the total before you start
If your exams were out of 100, leave the default. If a subject was marked out of 75 or 150, common with internal plus external splits, change the "out of" field first so every percentage comes out right.
Mixed totals in one semester
The "out of" setting applies to every row. If your subjects have different totals, convert each to a percentage yourself, enter 100 as the total, and type the percentage as the mark.
Percentage-based universities
On percentage systems such as the UK, Melbourne or Waterloo, marks already are the percentage. There is no grade-point step, so the tool credit-weights the marks directly into one average.
If your grade looks different from the transcript
The most likely reason is a slightly different cut-off in your department. The transcript is authoritative, so enter its grades directly in the CGPA calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CGPA from marks?
Convert each subject's marks to a percentage, find its grade point from your grade bands, multiply by credits, add everything up and divide by total credits.
What grade is 78% on the 10-point scale?
Under the common pattern, 70 to 79% is an A, worth 8 grade points. Your department may use slightly different boundaries.
How accurate are the mark-to-grade cut-offs?
They follow the most common convention for each scale. Universities and departments can set their own boundaries, so treat the result as a strong estimate and confirm against your official grading policy.
What if my marks are out of 75 or 150?
Set the "marks entered below are each out of" field to your actual total. The tool converts to a percentage internally, so the grade lookup stays accurate.
Can I mix subjects with different totals?
Not in one pass. Convert each subject to a percentage first, enter 100 as the total, and type the percentage in as the mark.
Does this work for percentage-based universities?
Yes, but differently. The marks are already the percentage, so the tool credit-weights them into one average and shows the honours classification.
Why did I get a different grade than my transcript?
Your department's cut-offs probably differ slightly from the common convention, especially near a boundary. Your transcript is always the authoritative source.
