CGPA to Marks Calculator

Scholarship forms, admission portals and government applications often want marks out of a fixed total: 100, 500, 600 or 1200. This tool converts your CGPA to any total you need.

Quick answer: To convert CGPA to marks, first convert it to a percentage (for example CGPA × 9.5), then multiply by your total and divide by 100. An 8.4 CGPA is 79.8%, which equals 79.8 out of 100, 478.8 out of 600 or 957.6 out of 1200.

CGPA to marks formula

CGPA, percentage and marks are three ways of describing the same performance. Marks out of a total are just the percentage scaled up or down. Once you have the percentage from your university's own rule, one more step gives you the marks.

Marks = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total marks

For the common CBSE-style rule, percentage = CGPA × 9.5, so the full formula becomes Marks = (CGPA × 9.5 ÷ 100) × Total. If your university publishes a different rule, such as VTU's (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, select it in the tool and it will use that percentage first.

Worked example: CGPA 8.4

  1. Percentage = 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%
  2. Out of 100: 79.8
  3. Out of 500: 79.8 ÷ 100 × 500 = 399
  4. Out of 600: 79.8 ÷ 100 × 600 = 478.8
  5. Out of 1200: 79.8 ÷ 100 × 1200 = 957.6

Same student, same CGPA, four different-looking numbers. Only the "out of" total changed, so all of them describe an identical academic standing.

Why forms ask for marks instead of CGPA

Many scholarship and admission portals were built around percentage-based boards and have not been updated for CGPA. Others need one comparable number from applicants who studied under different grading systems. Converting to the total they state is the accepted workaround, and it is not a sign that anything is wrong with your CGPA.

The total on a form is rarely your real exam total. A form asking for "marks out of 1200" is not asking you to rebuild subject-wise marks. It wants your percentage scaled to its number.

Tips for getting the number right

Do not round too early

CGPA → percentage → marks is a two-step conversion. Keep the percentage to two decimals until the final multiplication, then round once. This stops the answer drifting by a mark or two.

Check which formula the form expects

Some forms say "use CGPA × 9.5". If yours does, use it, even if your university uses a different rule. If your university publishes its own rule, mention it in a note.

Keep proof ready

Many Indian universities issue a CGPA-to-percentage conversion letter on request. If a portal rejects your own calculation, attach that letter along with your marksheet.

Reverse conversion is an estimate

Marks → CGPA works backwards through the same formula, but the forward step already involves rounding, so the result may not match your transcript exactly. Treat it as a close estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to marks out of 100?

Multiply your CGPA by 9.5 on the CBSE standard. An 8.4 CGPA gives 79.8 out of 100. If your university uses a different formula, apply that instead.

How do I convert CGPA to marks out of 1200?

Convert CGPA to percentage first, then multiply by 12, because 1200 ÷ 100 = 12. An 8.4 CGPA gives 79.8%, which is 957.6 out of 1200.

How do I convert CGPA to marks out of 600?

Multiply the percentage by 6. At 79.8%, that is 478.8 out of 600.

Does the "out of" total change my percentage?

No. Your percentage is fixed by your CGPA and the formula. The total only changes how it is written, such as 79.8 out of 100 or 957.6 out of 1200.

Why does a scholarship form ask for marks?

Many portals use percentage-based fields or need a single comparable number across applicants from different boards. Converting to their stated total is the normal workaround.

Can I convert marks back to CGPA?

Yes, use the direction toggle. The tool divides marks by the total to get a percentage and then reverses the formula. Treat the output as an estimate rather than an exact match to a transcript.

Is this the same as CGPA to percentage?

It adds one more multiplication. If a form only wants a percentage, use the CGPA to Percentage converter.
