Percentage to CGPA Converter
Turn your marksheet percentage into a CGPA. Choose the CBSE ÷ 9.5 standard, the direct ÷ 10 method, VTU's rule, or a custom divisor.
Quick answer: To convert percentage to CGPA, divide your percentage by 9.5. For example, 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. Some institutions divide by 10 instead, and VTU uses CGPA = (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75.

Percentage to CGPA formula
CBSE's published rule converts CGPA to percentage by multiplying by 9.5. Converting back is simply the reverse: divide the percentage by 9.5. Most Indian institutions that ask for a CGPA equivalent follow this method, but not all of them do, so check what your form or university specifies.
| Method | Formula | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE standard | % ÷ 9.5 | The form or institution follows CBSE |
| Direct | % ÷ 10 | The form states "CGPA = percentage / 10" |
| VTU | (% ÷ 10) + 0.75 | Your degree is from VTU |
| Custom | % ÷ your divisor | Your university publishes its own rule |
Same marks, different answers
The method you choose can change the result by almost a full point, so it is worth getting right. Take a student with 76.5%:
| Method | Working | CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE standard | 76.5 ÷ 9.5 | 8.05 |
| Direct | 76.5 ÷ 10 | 7.65 |
| VTU | (76.5 ÷ 10) + 0.75 | 8.40 |
Rule of thumb: if the form does not say which method to use, use ÷ 9.5 and mention it in a note. If it names your university, use that university's own rule.

A CGPA cannot go above 10 on a 10-point scale, so results above 10 are capped. VTU's formula reaches 10 at 92.5%.
How to convert percentage to CGPA, step by step
- Find the exact percentage on your marksheet, to two decimals if possible.
- Check which divisor your university or the receiving organisation specifies.
- Divide the percentage by that divisor. For VTU, divide by 10 and add 0.75.
- Round to two decimals and cap the result at 10.
Example: 82.4% ÷ 9.5 = 8.67 CGPA.
When do you actually need this?
- Admissions and scholarships that only accept CGPA while your board gave a percentage.
- Job applications with a CGPA field, where your degree reports percentage.
- Study abroad forms, which often ask for CGPA on a 10-point scale before an official evaluation.
- Planning, for example, to see what percentage you need to reach a target CGPA.
If an application asks for the CGPA printed on your marksheet, enter that value. Use this converter only when the form asks for an equivalent. For the opposite direction, try the CGPA to Percentage calculator.
